Greyhounds of Mississippi & Louisiana Play Day

Pelican Bark Park
63350 Pelican Dr
Mandeville, LA  704448

This has become a meeting place for our adopters and their greyhounds to visit and play off leash.  This informal meeting will be held from 10am until 11am, weather permitting.  On days when we've other events (Meets and Greets, etc), the "regulars" probably won't attend.

For those of you who do go, please be respectful of all the rules - pick up after your pups and don't allow your dog(s) to misbehave - this is a very public venue and all sorts of dog owners will see how we and our dogs behave.  If you have a dog that tends to be pushy or at all aggressive, please take a muzzle!  And while we're out there showing off our well behaved hounds, it would be nice if we all carried a small supply of GPA/LA&MS's brochures.  If you have questions about the park or if you just want to know if "the regulars" will be there, feel free to call Joyce Shugg at 985-373-0434  Visit http://pelicanpark.com/

GCSAR TRAINING

Gulf Coast Search and Rescue
Mississippi coastal area primarily

How SAR Dogs Can Help:
Because of their ultra sensitive hearing, night vision, endurance and keen sense of smell, dogs can play a key role in search and rescue efforts. Their skills make each dog team as useful as twenty to thirty trained human searchers in locating a missing person.

SAR dogs usefulness lies in the fact that every human has a scent - one that is not detectable by humans, but is by dogs. Trained SAR dogs use either air scenting or trailing techniques to help find people.

Our objective is to provide trained search and rescue personnel and resources to law enforcement, fire rescue, US Coast Guard, and any other agency which requests our assistance in locating missing persons, recovery of drowning victims or cadaver location.

Our primary response areas are the Mississippi coastal counties of Hancock, Harrison and Jackson and expanding to Mobile and Baldwin county in Alabama.

Some of our resources consist of:
-Search and Rescue Dog Teams
-Man Tracking Team
-Forensic and Cold Case Team
-Horseback Teams
-Therapy Teams

Baptist Medical Center Pet Therapy Program

Baptist Medical Center
1225 North State Street
Jackson, MS 39202

Some people say there’s nothing warmer than a cold, wet nose. That’s why Baptist is pleased to offer pet therapy for patients at Baptist Medical Center.

Pet therapy involves using a certified pet therapy dog to bring joy and comfort to patients. Pet therapy has been proven to have many health benefits, including reducing blood pressure, reducing stress and pain.

Dogs in Baptist’s Pet Therapy Program have had basic obedience and “Good Citizen” certification. They are further trained and have passed the Therapy Dogs International (TDI) certification test. The TDI evaluation ensures that the dog has a pleasant, mild temperament; is not frightened around a crowd or medical equipment, tolerates rough handling and touching and demonstrates advanced obedience skills useful in a public setting.

TDI provides four levels of certification for pet therapy dogs to acknowledge their volunteer commitment. They are:
• TDIA: TDI Active, 50 documented visits
• TDIAOV: TDI Active Outstanding Volunteer, 150 documented visits
• TDIRVA: TDI Remarkable Volunteer Achievement, 250 documented visits
• TDIEVA: TDI Exceptional Volunteer Achievement, 350 documented visits

Currently, there are six pet therapy dogs at Baptist; Blaze, Dallas, Maggie, Sam, Merlin and Molly.  Pet Therapy is available for any patient at Baptist Medical Center except those with conditions that might be adversely affected by it, and those whose physicians prohibit it. Visit website to see the wonderful dogs:
http://www.mbhs.org/patients_visitors/pet_therapy.htm

Pet Therapy is offered one day a week; visits are available made by appointment only. If you would like pet therapy, simply ask your nurse to request it for you.

Parks as Classrooms

Natchez National Historical Park

Curriculum Materials
Parks are a great place to learn, whether it's History or Biology, or anything in between. Take your class to a park for an on-site lesson, or bring the park to your classroom through place- and standards-based activities.

Field Trips
More than a field trip, your park adventure begins with a pre-visit activity/assessment, context setting and orientation. While at the park, hands on, experiential learning connects students with real examples and relevant curriculum. After your visit, post visit assessments and activities reinforce concepts and offer opportunities for expansion.

Sitting on 80 acres, this estate features beautifully manicured grounds and gardens, and gives a great example of an antebellum estate. Dogs are allowed on the grounds; they are not allowed in buildings. Dogs must be leashed and under their owner's control at all times. http://www.nps.gov/natc/index.htm

Mississippi's Natural Science Museum

Mississippi's Natural Science Museum.
2148, Riverside Dr
Jackson, MS 39202

For most people, the Museum exists as a near-magical place for children and families to engage with and learn about natural Mississippi. They certainly wouldn't be alone in thinking so-last year alone over 140,000 visitors enjoyed the Museum's indoor exhibits and 300-acres of natural landscape and nature trails.

Along with the usual museum features, we also offer many exciting and educational activities for children, such as our popular creature features, hands-on fish feedings, and Camp WILD. Down the hall from our exhibits is the much in demand Discovery Room for preschoolers. And for kids of all ages, we have our Kids Corner, which includes a wide variety of science activity sheets, workbooks, puzzles, and more.  Highly recommended.

The entire family will find new books, toys, Museum T-shirts, and artwork in our busy Dragonfly Shoppe. Please check on our family memberships to become a part of the Museum, save money on your trips, and enjoy the far reaching benefits of membership that come with being a part of Mississippi's Natural Science Museum.  (601) 354-7303  museum.mdwfp.com/

Greyhounds of Mississippi & Louisiana Meet & Greet

Petsmart
198 Promenade Blvd
Flowood, MS   39232

Meet & Greet events allow us to promote greyhound adoption.  These public, “hands-on” gatherings allow members of the public an opportunity to experience an “in the fur” meeting and the opportunity to touch and interact with our docile, friendly greyhounds.  It also allows potential adopters (or casual observers) to see how ex-racing greyhounds behave and how they adapt to family life.  Public exposure and education is extremely important in exhibiting to the public the suitability and availability of greyhounds as family pets.

If you have questions concerning this Meet & Greet, please contact: Celeste Trantham at 601-605-2542 or ctrantham@comcast.net

Project Hope

Project Hope - IDA MidSouth
52 County Road 241
Grenada, MS 38901

Director Doll Stanley has worked miracles through IDA's Project Hope - tirelessly rescuing abused and neglected animals while courageously investigating, exposing and ending animal suffering and abuse of unbelievable proportions. Her targets: animal auctions, puppy mills, animal dealers. Project Hope has brought hope in some areas where none existed.

What you can do: Adopt and you can  fund this campaign by giving  a tax-deductible donation. Undercover investigations, rescue efforts, and the care and feeing of injured, sick, and abused animals can incur enormous costs, as do the costs involved in the maintenance and running of our Project Hope sanctuary.

Equipment has to be purchased, fences, barns, and animal housing have to be built and maintained. Visit website at http://www.project-hope.net/index.html
